The mind builds its current wisdom around what we have been told. We are biased in favor of old information. Rejected that soul is divorced from the body. Believed all knowledge and though derived from sensory experience. Believed in model of the mind as a blank slate -- we are the product of our sensory experience - no ghost in the machine . Studied consciousness (experience of the world and mind) by examining structure (component parts) e. g. sensations, feelings. Method of introspection: break down descriptions into basic elements . Study of the purpose mental process serve in enabling people to adapt to environment. Approached psychological issues from a scientific approach. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Structuralists" focus on subjective experience not enough. Psychoanalytic theory emphasized the importance of unconscious mental processes shaping feelings, thoughts and behaviors. Behavior is determined by person"s capacity to choose how to think and act, based on unique perceptions.
