Social learning theories and the cognitive / cognitive behavioral theories. Emerged out of behavior/learning traditions, reflect careful science and methods, but broadened to emphasize cognition and social behavior. Beliefs, cognitions, thoughts determine emotions and behavior, ergo personality. Emphasize cognitive and behavioral aspects of personality, based mostly on extracting theories from therapy. Plasticity was important (flexibility to learn a variety of behavior in diverse situations) Triadic reciprocal causation model (behavior, environment, personal factors) Julian rotter & walter mischel social learning theory. Aaron beck cognitive, cognitive/behavioral, therapy based. Albert ellis cognitive-behavioral therapy (rational emotive therapy, w/abc theory of personality) Nothing fixed within humans not locked into a lifestyle. Current experiences & extrinsic reinforcement matter, but intrinsic reinforcement is more important. Behavior potential = f(expectancy and reinforcement value) The likelihood that a given behavior will occur in a particular situation. A person"s subjective preference for a given reinforcer relative to other possible reinforcers.
