Document Summary

Consequences of behavior effect behavior, responses resulting in satisfying consequences are learned. Behavioral theories explain learning in terms of environmental events. No difference between people and animals both learn based on reinforcement. Behavior is shaped through praise/punishment for certain responses. Creativity and independent thinking are not important to teaching. Human behaviors are largely the result of their experiences with environmental stimuli: the learning of our behavior is called conditioning. Learning is the relationships among stimuli and responses. Learning is most likely to occur when the stimuli and response occur contiguously. Most species learn in a similar manner. Famous for classic conditioning: trained a dog to salivate when it heard a bell ring. Research based on reflexes found in nature: sweating, flinching, yawning, jumping. Pavlov (1927), a russian physiologist discovered classical conditioning in dogs. Explains some learning of involuntary emotional and physiological responses: dog drooling when it smells food and later when it hears a bell.
