Absorption of light at specific wavelengths causes 11-cis-retinal in rhodopsin to isomerize into trans-retinal. Photoreceptors can be divided into rods and cones. Rods are the most numerous but do not absorb many wavelengths of light. Cones, while fewer than rods, absorb light at three different wavelengths. The absorption bands of the cones overlap to allow us to see innumerable different shades of color. Retinal can be derived from beta-carotene, so eat your carrots!
