"The Acts of the Apostles" is the sequel to Gospel of Luke
Acts is the only NT narrative to describe early church history
Acts describes how the Jesus movement transitioned from a Jewish sect to a distinct world
religion inclusive of Gentiles.
Traditionally, Luke has been considered the author based on the we sections
Luke was written around 70-90 AD
The ending of Acts is unexpected since it doesn't describe the outcome to Paul in Rome in
AD 62
Acts is addressed to Theophilus who possibly was a Roman official and a Gentile
The purpose of Acts seems to be: (1) to describe the gospel going to the gentiles
The Purposed of Acts was also to show Christianity was not anti-Jewish
Major themes of acts (3); Holy Spirit, divine guidance of history, and the progress of the
church in the world
Acts 1:8 is the programmatic verse for the narrative of acts
Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.
The followers of Jesus were to be witnesses in: (3 places)
During the Jewish festival of Pentecost, a phenomenal manifestation of the Spirit occurs
Peter preaches and 3,000 were baptized in verse 2: 14-47
Acts 3-7 describe the church in Jerusalem facing Jewish opposition and yet growing.
Stephen becomes the first Christian martyr after speaking strong words about the Temple and
the death of Jesus (6:8-8:3).
Philip preaches the gospel among the Samaritans and they are converted (8:5-25).
Philip is then led by the Spirit to preach the gospel to an Ethiopian eunuch who converts and
is then baptized (8:26-40).
Saul of Tarsus who initially opposed Christianity, becomes a believer in a dramatic
"conversion" experience when he encounters the risen Jesus on the road to Damascus (9:1-
22).
In this experience, Saul (later known as Paul) is commissioned to proclaim Jesus among the
gentiles
