ASCI 290 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Colostrum, Antibody
Document Summary
Colostrum: during last 2-4 weeks of gestation, under hormonal influences. Importance: liquid gold , production of antibodies by vaccination pregnant mares 4-6 weeks before labor, provides energy, collect any leaks. Quality: antibody content, thick, sticky, yellow, decreases quality, maiden mares and mares over 15 years, certain breeds, check quality with refractometer, 1-2 drops. Colostrum banking: to have on hand, foals from mares that died, when mare won"t let nurse, or are has poor quality colostrum, only bank good quality milk, store at -20 degrees celcius. Foal immune status: check 12-24 hours after birth. If <800 mg/dl = failure of passive transfer: <200 mg/dl of plasma antibodies = total fpt, 200-800 mg/dl = partial fpt, >800 mg/dl = successful passive transfer, 5% -20% of foals fail to achieve.
