Document Summary

Thomas kyd revenge tragedy: shakespeare stole for hamlet. Quarto 1 and quarto 2 both have signi cant scenes: quarto 2 is usually used in reproduction, quarto 1 is half the length of quarto 2, if you add all the versions it takes 4 hours. Whats happening on the surface versus underneath is a huge shakespeare theme: rosencrantz and guildenstern plan against hamlet, claudius schemes against the king and then hamlet, hamlet acts crazy. Hamlet doesn"t trust the supernatural the way macbeth does. Hamlet doesn"t kill claudius because he is in prayer: wants him to have sin on his soul. So he has to go to purgatory: where his father is. To be or not to be: questioning if he should be alive or dead. He doesn"t want to give up what he has gained by sin: the kingdom, truly loves gertrude, plots against hamlet. Gures out that hamlet knows he killed his father: the mouse trap play.
