Printing originated from chinese/korean (1,000 years before gutenberg) Facilitated mass communication for all religions, any ideas able to print. 15th century scribes would print/reprint books, documents, etc. Usually delegated to women since they didn"t work. If married, they would not be scribes but would go bear children. Chauffeur was apprentice to gutenberg, foster son of fouster. Became scribe at university library, told to go back to minze, germany. In exchange for loan of money, chauffeur works for gutenberg. Gutenberg bible most beautiful book, first one he created. 250 thousand -> 25 million, anyone can make any copies in and length, study, etc. Movable type lets any and all ideas be produced in mass groups. Gutenberg helped renaissance expand and reach bigger audience. Punch - steel pin with letter engraved in it. Lead pours into mold and can change with of letter stamp. 1950 - 1980 awkward years -> adapted to changes (moving away from metal plates)
