Polemarchus definition: justice=giving to each the things he is owed. Socrates shows him this is inconsistent with other things , modifies def, again inconsistent. Ppl do what they think is best. Elenchus has moral reformatory purpose, elencitic philosophizing makes ppl happier. Plato shares socrates" p(cid:396)eo(cid:272)(cid:272)upatio(cid:374) with ethics and definitions, but also modifies his method of inquiry and doctrines. Absolutely convinced that philosophy holds key to human happiness and welfare. After book i, the elenchus is conspicuous by its absence.
