Document Summary

Fairly normal thing to do: direct experience. Part of hunter gatherer experience that doesn"t work in todays society: in-group/out-group. Good way to make people hate each other. Kids given different colored t shirts, the kids played with the people with the same color t-shirt. In group was created by having more of one color. Negative behavior happened: implicit and explicit attitudes. We don"t know which infulences our behavior and how much. If you think you aren"t prejudice but we can tap into the unconscious part. All races: people sat closer to people of their own race and ethnicity than to other races and ethnicities. Outcomes of prejudice: discrimination, stereotype threat. If we buy into a stereotype, we are more likely to behave the way the stereotype would expect you to behave. People in contact have to be on a level playing field. Have to view each other as typical representatives of your group: equal standing, cooperation.
