But there were several developments that tied into the beginnings of social work and women being the primary gender in that profession. Prior to the 19th century higher education for women, was something that was few and far between. But this began to change, however by the latter part of the 19th century as existing colleges began to accept women into their curriculums. In addition, colleges were being established that only women would be able to enroll in. By the year 1920 women made up half of americans who were enrolled in college curriculums. century; colleges were establishing curriculums in the social sciences, to study the vast changes in america as a result of the nuio.
