But it had the same affect on those unmarried men, as well. Although young unmarried couples were engaged in sexual activities it was done in what was referred to as petting . The term lesbian was not used during the late 19th century but there were examples of women who coexisted with one and other, what they called back then boston marriages . Women being involved in personable and very intense relationships. In fact, jane adams was involved in one of these relationships for over 40 years. The term lesbian began to come into effect by the early 20th century, and the first so-called scientific studies were conducted to analyze what made lesbian women different from heterosexual women.
