Document Summary

Nervous system and endocrine system are the body s 2 communication networks. Nervous system operates quicker because it is electrical. Endocrine system lasts longer, 30 seconds to 1 week. Hormones produced, only a few cells respond to hormones. Hormones are the communication biochemicals of the endocrine system. Glands secrete hormones, which then travel in the blood stream and alter metabolism of 1 or more cells. Pathway: point of production to some target, starts in brain, targets different part of brain, then goes down into the body. Each hormone travels through the body, binds to target cells with the correct receptor protein. Travel through blood to get from point a to point b. Hormones affect mood, emotions, feelings of sexual attraction, and developmental patterns. Typically act fairly slowly because the target cell must produce new proteins. Receptors outside the cell on the cell membrane.
