HDF 110 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Tomboy, Genderqueer

56 views2 pages

Document Summary

Being a sociology major, gender socialization is a topic that we have brushed on before but never got into as deeply as we did in this course. I was a bit surprised by some of the things presented in the material and it was very interesting to see how a lot of these things correlated with my own personal experience. One of the facts presented in lecture was that gender socialization occurs more in families with boys and girls versus single-gendered child households. While this makes sense, it provoked an idea to me. I know that in my house, i was always the girly one while my sister was given the role of. Tomboy simply because my family put her in sports. So while she wasn"t necessarily gender socialized toward her sex, she was compensating for the lack of a boy in the family by participating in activities that boys would like.
