REL 334 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Ancestral Shrine, Day Of The Dead
Document Summary
Chapter 3 questions 4 & 5: the lodagaa carry out traditional african funeral customs that occur in four phases over the span of six months to several years. During the first stage, which is about a week long, the body is prepared to be buried, and a ceremony is performed for the public to mourn, followed by the burial. This stage relates to our traditions in almost every way. Our traditions last about a week as well. In most instances, when someone dies they are prepared for a viewing and then followed by an actual funeral to honor the dead. Thelodagaa find the cause of death in a second ceremony. Instead of looking for a sickness they look for a more spiritual cause of death. This is different from our traditions because the cause of death is known to us before the death is even announced to everyone else.
