BIOL 222 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Mesoderm, Merocrine, Macrophage
Document Summary
Tissue- group of cells similar in structure that perform common/related function. 4 basic tissues: epithelial- sheet of cells that covers body surfaces/cavities, 2 main forms, covering & lining epithelia, external & internal surfaces (i. e: skin, glandular epithelia, secretory tissue in glands (i. e: salivary glands) Main functions: protection, absorption, filtration, excretion, secretion & sensory reception. *further you go to the surface, cells don"t receive much nutrients and dies. Simple: absorption, secretion, or filtration processes. Simple squamous: flattened cells with sparse cytoplasm, function: materials to pass by diffusion & filtration, secretes lubricating substance in serosae, location: kidney glomeruli & air sacs of lungs. 2 types: endothelium, lining of lymphatic vessels, blood vessels. & heart: mesothelium, serious membranes in ventral body cavity(lines body cavities) Simple cuboidal: single layer, cubelike cells with large spherical central nuclei, function: secretion & absorption, location: kidney tubules, ovary surface, thyroid glands, simple glands & ducts. Simple columnar: single layer of tall cells with round/oval nuclei.
