These occur on rivers with large drainage basins. They require sustained rainfall over long time periods. Are overall more destructive but also more predictable than flash floods. All rivers move more sediment during floods (i. e. , faster moving water) Downstream floods are associated with meandering rivers; i. e. , rivers on well-established floodplains. The rivers deposit fine-grained sediment on their floodplains during flood events. Floods move down river valleys as waves that usually rise quicker than they fall. Downstream floods rise gradually (days or weeks) but also hang around for a. 2011 mississippi & missouri river flood long time (up to months at a time). Large floods occurred on both the mississippi river and missouri rivers in 2011. Flooding occurred along the southern mississippi river in louisiana & mississippi despite drought conditions in those states. Heavy rain in other parts of miss river drainage basin was the cause.
