Repeated rediscovery of apoptosis: vogt, 1842: introduced concept of natural cell death to describe developmental cell death in toads, flemming, 1885: gave first morphological description of apoptosis. Bcl-2: b cell lymphoma, bcl-1, bcl-2. Investigators injected into blood cell line and asked whether growth occurred in soft agar or if tumors grew in mice. Cells would not grow in soft agar, would not form tumors in mice: suggested bcl-2 was not a classic oncogene like myc, ras, or src.
