Characteristics of sls that are the same as spoken languages. -the milestones of sl acquisition appear at the same time as spoken languages. -iconicity is more pervasive in sls than spls, visual iconicity. -structure is based on properties of visual, rather than auditory perception; There is a linguistic community and a model from spoken language, but no experience with signs as a primary means of communication. We need to take this kind of production seriously as well because it tells us what hearing people can create on the spot. And some cultures may be better at it than others. Use the gestural system as their primary means of communication. We are only able to speculate about spoken languages at this stage. Rousseau (this week) is speculation, like those of cooperation for hunting prey or grooming. Language emergence and language evolution are not the same thing. There is a linguistic community, but no language model.
