Between the soprano and alto, and alto and tenor, it has to be less than or equal to an octave. Between bass and tenor can be as large as an octave and a half. Voices can"t cross, always has to be satb from highest to lowest. When one or more of the four voices goes above or below the note of another voice in the previous chord. Side note: always raise the leading tone in minor, expcept in a major iii chord, or if it is in a descending melody. Tendency tone notes that need to move stepwise (up or down) Can omit the 5th in 7th chords in root position. In outer voices (bass or soprano), the leading tone has to go to tonic. In inner voices, the leading tone can go to tonic as well, or drop by a third.
