ANTH 112 Lecture 2: Anth Lecture #2 Notes
Document Summary
Let"s start with how archaeology developed as a profession; what we did back then and what we do now. This is important to know because some of the fundamental methods and theories that we use in archaeology today have roots extending back quite some time. The beginning of archaeology as a profession started out as a simple curiosity. In fact, it is probably safe to say that most humans have an inherent curiosity about the past. But there is a distinct difference between digging up relics in one"s backyard and the science of archaeology. Exactly how long humans have been curious about their past is difficult to say. But by studying the history of archaeology, we can certainly get a better idea of when that simple curiosity developed into a scientific profession. This turning point from curiosity to professional was different in several areas of the globe.
