ANTH 363 Lecture 10: Arctic Cultures Lec. 10
Document Summary
Inuit people eat about 600 pounds of meat per person per year. In comparison americans eat about 200 pounds of meat per year, arctic peoples burn off practically all the calories they eat each day. No other foods with it like vegetables or fruits. No cardiovascular problems with many of them or extremely low levels of it. The marine life they eat has high levels of vitamin c and omega 3 fatty acids. Proves to be very good for their health: fat=a delicacy/necessity. Inuit"s that were put on a stage and presented to people became questioned as whether it is truly ok to do. People were sometimes stuffed after death and put on display: example of ishi the last yahi. Brain was in smithsonian museum while his ashes were stored elsewhere. Provides an adequate definition of reality: ethnographic present-get what you can before it"s gone, impose a version of what we think it was like.
