ANTH 363 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Anomie, Wage Labour
Document Summary
Transhuman-people migrate depending on the time of the year. In a relatively circumscribed area: subsistence cycle, wage labor done in summer. Fish in the fall to prepare for winter. Fish is critical, men hunt it, and women process it. Gill nets used by arctic people but industrial areas mass-produced them. -biologists worried spring hunt would deplete the amount of waterfowl too much during the migratory mating season: hhh=high harvesting households. Critical to households and communities: harvest wood all winter long, trapping becomes most important in winter. Muskrats and beavers: overland travel without snow=nearly impossible, learn the layout of the land and how to survive, colder to the north, trap lines=food, furs, and funds. Gave economic advantage for people preventing migratory behavior: hunting and fishing are cooperative activities, trapping is an individual activity, schools can be good or bad. Terms and info to know: anomie=normlessness, no norm, synnomie=opposite of anomie, norms=rules, synnomie=encouraged by subsistence economies.
