ANTH 481 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Transverse Plane, Epiphyseal Plate, Coronal Plane
Document Summary
Axial skeleton=the head and trunk/core (ribs, skull, and spine) Appendicular skeleton=appendages of body with shoulder blades and pelvis. Coronal plane (aka frontal plane)-separates the front of the body from the back of the body. Sagittal plane-separates the body in left and right sides, can be uneven. Mid-sagittal plane- perfectly splits the body down the middle into left and right sides. Transverse plane-separates the body into top and bottom portions. Lateral=away from the middle of the body. Posterior=to the back or rear of the body. Ventral=towards the belly in animals, similar to anterior in humans. Dorsal=towards the back in animals, similar to posterior in humans. Cranial=towards the head in animals, similar to superior in humans. Caudal=towards the tail in animals, similar to inferior in humans. Proximal=closer to the point of origin on an appendage. Distal=farther from the point of origin on an appendage. External =on the outside of the body. Inferior= towards the feet, away from the head.
