Variation mostly due to thickness of dermis. Classified thick or thin based on thickness of epidermis4 (only one layer of epidermis) Stratum basale (layer that touches the basement membrane, one layer) Adult stem cells - produce keratinocytes by mitosis. One layer of low columnar to cuboid shaped cells. Synthesize the protein keratin which causes cells to flatten. Layer named for desmosomes which looks like spines. Keratinocytes migrate to surface in 30-40 days. 3-5 layers of cells - have dark staining granules. Up to 30 layers of dead cells (no organelles) filled with keratin. Surface of stratum corneum - exfoliation of cells.
