Nerve endings make this out most sensitive organ in the body. Helps regulate body temperature (red skin after working out) Basal constrict - blood turns white to preserve organ. Variation mostly due to thickness of dermis. Classified thick or thin based on thickness of epidermis4 (only one layer of epidermis) Stratum basale (layer that touches the basement membrane, one layer) Adult stem cells - produce keratinocytes by mitosis. One layer of low columnar to cuboid shaped cells. Synthesize the protein keratin which causes cells to flatten. Layer named for desmosomes which looks like spines.
