Chapter 3- MANAGEMENT AND MOTIVATION
Motive- “something (a need or desire) that causes a person to act.”
Motivate- “to provide with a motive.”
Motivation- “the act or process of motivating.”
Why Motivation Matters
Motivated employees…
• Are fully engaged in their work
• Contribute at a much higher level
• Are invested, happier, and loyal
• Motivated employees motivate others
• Influence better organizational outcomes resulting in a better competitive advantage for the
organization
Myths about Motivation and Satisfaction
• “Although I’m not motivated by extrinsic rewards, others are”
• All motivation is intrinsic
• Some people just are not motivated
• People are motivated only by money
• Motivation is manipulation
• One-size-fits-all reward programs
• Motivational people are born, not made
• Motivated versus Engaged
Engaged healthcare employees display the following characteristics: Engaged- a verb to do…. Be
attracted, retain, secure, carry out a task, participate in
• Are more productive
• Are more focused on population being served
• Are safer
• Are loyal
• Have positive behaviors
• More or higher profits
History of Motivation
2,500 yr ago it started with Athens and the Grecian empire- motivated people built the city
1809, William James- Intrinsic motivation (from within)
1940, human behavior in the workplace was really studied for the first time
The need to study Motivation
In 1940 They psychologist decided to study motivation in the workforce. Perhaps more is needed
than a great leader??
They picked 4 areas to study:
1. Needs of motivation at different levels in the business
2. What are Extrinsic factors
3.What are Intrinsic factors
4. Finally, the Management weighs in on motivation and comes up
with their own theories
