PSSC 330 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Cellulose, Vegetarianism, List Of Human Positions
Document Summary
Trophic levels- feeding levels with respect to primary source of energy. Producers and consumers each occupy a different trophic level. Plants gather energy from uv light, photosynthesis, grow. Herbivores (microbial fermentation able to handle excess cellulose) At each level, some biomass is passed to next level or expelled in the form of heat or fecal matter returning to soil. Biomass decreases at higher trophic levels (not all is consumed from one level to the next) Not all that is digested is turned into mass. Part of mass is converted to energy or heat. Vegetaria(cid:374)is(cid:373) results i(cid:374) a decrease of hu(cid:373)a(cid:374) positio(cid:374) o(cid:374) food chai(cid:374) (cid:894)if we do(cid:374)"t eat a(cid:374)i(cid:373)als they"ll eat us(cid:895) *cellulose- abundance on earth, most naturally occurring organic molecule on earth. Cows, sheep, goats, horses, llamas, alpacas, etc necessary to digest cellulose for us. *only 10% of earth has the ability to be farmed (remainder is unsuitable)
