PSYC 323 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Comfort Food, Pituitary Gland, Polyphagia
Document Summary
Stress impacts appetite in one of 2 ways. About where stressed are and how long stress is taking place. (cid:1152) of ppl eat more with stress. (cid:1151) of ppl eat less with stress. Hypothalamus crh pituitary acth adrenal cortex glucocorticoids (cortisol) Stimulates appetite (cause it allows us to replenish all resources we used when we dealt with running away from the lion), stimulates appetite for specific types of food. Ratio of crh and glucocorticoids determines effect on appetite. Large amounts of crh & little (small) glucocorticoid. Have to start with a lot of crh to start secreting glucocorticoids. Type i and ii haven"t shut down, still secreting crh but accumulated glucocorticoids. Appetite suppressed (don"t want food when were active) Small amounts of crh & large amounts of glucocorticoids (were in the end, were at recovery period) Recovery replenishing after depleting resources (that happened during the stressor)(appetite is stimulated, starchy fatty sugars, comfort foods)
