Document Summary

In the reading sex and religion: an introduction, authors phil zuckerman and christel. Manning explain the difference between a sex positive and a sex negative religion. A religion which is sex positive is one who excepts the act as acceptable, natural, and in some situations holy. Sex positive religions also associate this action with positive descriptive words such as sacred or divinely lauded. The hindu religion is considered a sex positive religion as there are many references to sex in stories about their gods and history. They suggest that the sexual degradation could be a result of fear in men"s desire to control women. They also offer the idea that these religions wanted to set these regulations just for the simplicity of being more in control. They talk about how men in ancient societies did not fully understand their roll in the reproduction process, leading to a loosely regulated sex life within that culture.
