HIST 011 Lecture Notes - Lecture 70: Al-Qaeda, Iraq Study Group, Federal Emergency Management Agency
Document Summary
In early 2003 bush declared iraq had not complied with numerous un resolutions, and that the game was over . Us launched air attacks on iraq on march 19 without the support of the un. In less than 4 weeks, us armed forces with support of the british and other allies, overran iraqi forces, captured capital city of baghdad, and ended hussein"s dictatorship. When us couldn"t find wmds in iraq, criticism of war of choice and the regime change mounted both at home and overseas. Defeat of iraq and capture of saddam hussein did not end violence in iraq. Diverse groups of insurgents (sunni followers of the former dictator, shiite militias, and foreign fighters such as al-qaeda) continued to attack us and their allied troops and one another. Millions of iraqis fled country or were displaced by the secretarian attacks.
