Document Summary

A canon is a set of rules, created by polykleitos of argos in 450. Bce, on how to perfectly depict the human figure and create the ideal form of beauty and physical perfection. The canon includes guidelines for proportions of body parts compared to others, through proportions and relationships between each one, and a system of ratios that explain how to create each body part based on a basic unit. For example, a basic unit would be length of one"s index finger. The greeks believed that if a sculptor follow these rules when creating a work, their result would be an ideal of physical beauty or perfection. The dying man from the east pediment, an ancient greek work, and the colossal figure of akhenaten, an ancient egyptian work, both depict the human figure, but do so in very different ways. Figure of akhenaten portrays an egyptian figure head in a new style, which emerged during akhenaten"s reign.
