Document Summary

The neoclassicism movement spawned from the age of enlightenment, due to the philosophical return to classical thought and renewed appreciation of greek and roman cultures. It also drew inspiration from the excavation of the ruins of herculaneum and pompeii. Neoclassicism centered around a few core ideologies: patriotism, courage, and sacrifice. It also displayed political ideologies by pledging and displaying their allegiance and civic duty to the state rather than the church or family. Neoclassic artists rejected the rococo superficial beauty and aristocratic frivolity. They believed that strong drawing was rational, therefore morally better and that art should be cerebral, not sensual. The element of works during movement utilize clarity of forms, shallow space, strong and sharp lines, and contain no evidence of brushstrokes. One of the most famous works of the neoclassicism movement is the death of marat by jacques-louis david. In this work, he utilizes iconographic elements by substituting the iconography of christian art for more contemporary issues.
