15 Grazing Systems and Methods
Grazing system integrated combination of animal, plant, soil, and
other environmental components and the grazing method(s) by which
the system is managed to achieve specific results or goals
System vs. Method
o Grazing system = management intensive grazing
Example: mode of transportation (plane, train, or
automobile) used to get you somewhere
o Grazing methods = “…technique of grazing management
designed to achieve a specific objective
Example semi truck, miniwan, prius
o What are your needs, objectives, or goals?
Stocker, daily gain/acre or per head
Dairy, milk per cow, or per acre
Fencing + Animals ≠ Grazing System

o Forage allowance = forage mass / AU at any point in time
High allowance: large amount of forage per animal to
select/eat
Performance per animal increase
o Grazing pressure (GP) = AU / Forage mass
Low GP = forage supply exceeds animals need
High individual performance (selective grazing)
Low output per acre (waste forage)
Increasing GP, increases output per acre
o The Mott Curve
o Stocking rate: animals/land surface over a defined time period
o Stocking density: animals/land at a single point in time
Measuring forage production/mass
o Hand clipping samples method used to determine the amount of
forage available
Accurate but labor intensive

o Measuring stick. Highly variable due to forage species, not
uniform architecture
o Rising plate meters needs to be calibrated using hand clipping
and squares
