Most basic unit of organization is the chemical unit. Have to understand how these chemical reactions are going to occur. Matter: latin, materia: timber, or substance, matter is anything that occupies space and has mass, is composed of chemical elements, mass does not mean weight, weight is mass multiplied by some effect of gravity, solid, liquid, gas. Elements: substances that cannot be decomposed into smaller substances by ordinary chemical reactions: chemical elements, 112 chemical elements, 92 occur naturally, human body contains 24, o, c, h, & n= 96% of the chemical composition of our body. These plus ca&p= 99: others are called trace elements. Energy: greek root, en- within, ergon- means work, the work that is within something, the ability to do work, work: the ability to put matter into motion. Energy levels: regions in which the electrons move around the nucleus, identified as orbitals or shells, each has a maximum number of electrons it can hold.
