CH-1010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Lattice Energy, Covalent Bond, Bond-Dissociation Energy
Document Summary
Strong electrostatic attraction between particles (high lattice energy= high melting point) Combination of metal cations and non- metal anions. Low melting point solids, liquids , and gases. Weak attractive force between molecules, act together as a single particle. Occur whne atoms share parits to achieve and octet. When two atoms approach each other, they can form a bond which results in a lower energy for the atoms. Bond formation lowers the energy of the atoms or ions involved. Bond formation releases energy, bond breaking requires energy. At low energy point, there is a balance of interactions. Attractive interactions: both nuclei attracted to the same valence electrons. Repulsive interactions: between each atoms nuclei and electrons. Atoms far apart: weak attractive interaction and no bond, high energy. Atoms too close: large repulsive interaction, high energy. Optimum distance called bond length: stable arrangement with balance of interactions. Multiple bonds require more energy to break than single bonds.
