Transitions relates the main points of a speech. Signposts first, second, third, next, therefore etc. ; lets the audience know where the speaker is in their speech. Internal previews introduction for a main point. Internal summary conclusion for a main point. Patterns of organization chronological, spatial, topical, causal, problem-solution, and monroe"s. Introduction has five elements - attention getter, topic, relevance, credibility, preview/thesis. Conclusion has two elements summarize main ideas and clincher refer back to the beginning, close effectively. Narrow enough topic, balanced main points, organized, test the supportive material, coordinate vs subordinate. Principles of outlining singularity, consistency, uniformity, adequacy, parallelism. Mp: sub 1, sub 2, sub 3. Uniformity each idea should be easily expressed in one sentence. Adequacy in order to support your information adequately you need at least two points per main point, sub point, sub sub point, etc. Parallelism must structure sentences the same way.
