Geology in the news: satellite data is giving geologists new info about how glaciers are melting. Layers of the earth: review: theia impact and density stratification, compositional layers of the earth (also known as chemical layer) 1- crust (8-45 km: light elements (si, al, o) Oxygen is in the rocks and minerals: what we walk on, 2 types of crust. Some of the crust elements, but not as abundant. Magnesium and manganese, iron and nickel are more common. Core (contains two layers: 3- outer core, 4- inner core. Iron and nickel most abundant elements in the core: physical layers of the earth. 1- lithosphere: twice as thin as the crust in some areas, very brittle rocks. It takes a lot of force for them to break. 2-asthenosphere: rocks are not brittle any more they are ductile (plastic, a chocolate bar can be brittle or ductile. Freeze it and it will be brittle and hard to bite.
