Though was thin layer on crust of earth but now we know that the thin layer is thick and there are microbes in the air that do things. Ecosystem: actual abiotic component (environment) + community of organisms. Habitat: portion of ecosystem where population resides. Exploit similar or same resources even if they are not apart of the same population. Interact w each other, other organisms and abiotics. Supplies nutrients, other condi for growth and abiotics. Population = self containing group of interacting individuals living in same place. Community: self contained group of interacting organisms. Individual requirements for growth and feeding strategies. Contribute differently to ecosystem depending on amount. More biomass = fix more co2 until you reach limiting point. Atmosphere: what we breath and what microbes breath. Limiting nutrients in ocean = phosphorus and iron. Governed by both biotic and abiotic components.
