MICR-4010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Human Microbiome Project, Short-Chain Fatty Acid, Human Microbiota

24 views3 pages

Document Summary

The human microbiota is the microbes that are present in the environment while the microbiome is the genetic material/genes in the microbiota. Humans have lifelong association with microbes from birth through colonization. They colonize surface tissues such as skin and mucous membranes. In humans the internal tissues should be sterile but scientists have been able to culture and amplify bacteria here. In the human body the microbiome is considered the forgotten organ and scientists find it hard to figure out who has dominance over whom because microbes and humans affect each other kind of like cross feeding. The human microbiome project is a form of beta diversity that shows the similarity in samples from different people and different sites. The closer dots in this graph are, the more similar the otus are. These dots have a relationship with each other. The skin is more diverse than the gi tract. Large variations in phyla lead to similar metabolic pathways.
