Structure and function = related in bacteria. Optimized for ecosystem the organism is in. Ecophysiology: in ecosystems certain services must be performed. Services based on physiology of organism and substrate affinity. Services = nutrient cycling, nitrogen fixation, etc. Multiple organisms can do same service but separate into different ecosystems based on substrate affinity. Two people can have different bacteria in their microbiome but the same services are being performed in both people. Phylogeny: based on evolutionary relatedness of organisms. Does not give a lot of information about organism itself. Prokaryotes can live as single cells in suspended liquid or in multicellular populations on solid surfaces. Two major phyla = euryarchaeota and crenarchaeota. Hot springs, alkaline and acid waters) and in non extreme environments (ex. Methanogenic: produce methane by reduction of carbon dioxide extremely halophilic: require high sodium levels. Several forms = flagellar, gliding and twitching. Flagellar is the best understood out of the three of them.
