Use of western blot depends on the question you are asking and the tools available to you. Useful in confirming the expression of proteins. Transcription does not always equate to translation in bacterial systems (this is especially so when working in eukaryotic systems) Pcr is useful to tech to microbial geneticists and physiologist. Creative use of pcr techniques can bring to light the microbes capabilities. Techniques gain more power in combination with other techniques (ex. Generally limited to detection of genetic potential. Can use pcr primer sets to determine if the org under study has a gene capable of producing a given product. Figure out what products can be made from what genes. Can use the pcr product o obtain a species/strain specific. This follows the production of rna transcripts and is used to detect when during cell growth or cell cycle genes are being expressed. Also used to detect transcription when environmental conditions change.
