a. Context
i. Lenin got very sick very fast
ii. It is said that Stalin was the last person on earth that Lenin wanted
in charge, yet somehow Lenin mysteriously appointed him last
second
iii. Reign of Terror
b. Ideology: Communism
i. All government and economic powers were centralized in Stalin’s
hands
ii. Created the Soviet Union
c. Policies
i. Central planning
1. Focused on 5 year plans
a. Stuck with the plans no matter what
i. Didn’t matter it the plan was completely failing
and not working at all
ii. Didn’t matter how the people and
circumstances changed during these 5 years
ii. Political repression: “Great Purge” (1934 – 1939)
1. Rounded up anyone that could possibly be against Stalin
and Communism
a. Included people leaning towards the utopian version
of Marxism
2. People turned on friends to gain their own security
3. World War II was happening the arms race started
4. KGB secret police force
iii. Collectivization
