PSYCH 3830 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Bulimia Nervosa, Feeding Tube, Binge Eating
Lecture 1 - Friday March 16
FEEDING & EATING DISORDERS
1. Anorexia Nervosa - restricts intake-relative to requirements → low body weight
○ Intense fear of gaining weight/becoming fat
○ Disturbance in how they experience body weight
○ Happy/proud of being thin
→ restricting type: don’t eat anything or very little, diet, fasting, excessive exercise
→ binge eating/purging type: engaged in recurrent episodes of binge eating/purging.
Successful bulimic
→ difficult to treat: tons of social support for being thin
2. Bulimia Nervosa - recurrent episodes of binge eating. They eat in a discrete period of
time. A lot more food than in a normal/regular setting (over indulging). They eat to this
point all the time
○ Eats in a short time (~2 hours) are larger amount of food than one would expect
○ Has a sense of lack of control when they’re eating DURING the episode. Not
before or after
→ inappropriate compensatory behaviors
○ Difference? The person does not have a low body weight!!
○ Concerned about being overweight
3. Binge Eating Disorders - recurrent episodes of binge eating
○ Eat more rapidly than normal
○ Eat until full
○ Eat alone
○ Disgusted, depressed and or guilty afterwards
○ Distress that the binge eating is present
All three of these above involve binge eating
Treatment for these disorders is challenging.
Ego syntonic - like being the way they are
Ego dystonic
4. Pica
5. Rumination Disorder
6. Avoidant/Restrictive Intake Disorder
Lecture 2 - Monday March 26
FEEDING and EATING DISORDERS - the person is self eating. They are choosing to
binge/purge/restrict.
1. Anorexia Nervosa - super underweight. Super distorted body image.
2. Bulimia Nervosa - excessively fast/exercise
Biggest difference between these two is if the person is super thin and a super distorted body
image.
3. Binge Eating - binging of bulimia nervosa but no purging.
