THEA-2100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: American Repertory Theater, Christopher Durang, Nanny
Document Summary
First presented off-broadway on november 9, 1983 by playwright horizons in nyc. Had its world premiere at the american repertory theatre in cambridge, The home of john and helen, a couple in their late 20s or early 30s-standing over a bassinet. They are quite and odd couple, john calls baby a baked potato. John complains that it doesn"t speak english-helen presumes baby can understand them and wants to raise it right. The baby seemingly doesn"t like john-helen randomly says she wants a divorce, says she doesn"t like his blond hair and that she hates him (says she"s not ready for marriage) Helen seems to have a complex against men-says they are violent-they. Ironic statement: be glad you"re not ever going to be a man . Weird quote from helen: we don"t" know what sex it is. The doctor said we could decide later but john said gender is a fact, not a decision.
