Field hollers (secular/nonreligious) delta/country blues rock. Rock music originated from blues in the mississippi delta - delta/country. Stomping and clapping for rhythm during chants was incredibly important. When slavery was very prevalent, europeans worked very hard to try to strip the africans of their traditions and culture. Civil war ended in 1865; slavery itself was over but the south was far from done. Landowner would lease part of their own land to black farming families and would overcharge them for work clothes, farming tools, etc which would leave black families essentially working for free for the white man. Terror tactics and lynch mobs - kkk . Griot - tribal storyteller/historian that passes down stories and traditions through stories and songs. Alan lomax - continued father"s tradition of field recordings, recorded songs and traditions with portable recording tools. Chant and repeat songs that prisoners would chant when working could hold secret messages such as having a secret meeting in the woods.
