Historian hine (1999) asserts, the second decade of life is when one"s personhood becomes defined in terms of the wider world. Rutter (1995) notes that adolescence occurs at age 11 or 12 for girls; age 12 or 13 for boys. Thornburg (1980) identifies the major characteristics of adolescence. Hersch (1998) describes how adolescents are labeled and classified based on how they look and act, like so many phyla in the animal kingdom .
