Hypothetical syllogisms – if/then
Simple propositions
My dog is brown
Symbolize = p
Opposite/denial/contradictory
My dog is not brown
Symbolize = ~p = “not p”
John doesn’t run fast
Symbolize = “q”
John does run fast
~q
Disjunctive proposition – two simple propositions joined by “or”
Either Fido ran away or Fido got hit by a car
Two simple propositions – disjuncts
Two kinds of or
Inclusive or includes possibility of both being true
Exclusive or excludes it (one or the other)
It will be inclusive or in this class
Take first disjunct – p, second – q
So: p or q
Or = v
p v q
