The Personality Response to Mischel's arguments
1. Yes we can demonstrate some behavioral consistency
-Said Mischel "cherry picked" his studies
-Plenty of studies show situation-to-situation correlations higher than 0.30-
0.40
-Some would even say this is a moderate to high correlation
Of your friends/family, who is most likely to
-Show up late to a party?
-Be assertive with their boss?
-Be irritable when stressed?
-Be arrogant when they're right and you're wrong?
-Care about balancing their checkbook?
We are pretty good at predicting who is most likely to be ______
-Especially if we have aggregated predictive data
-We have been going to parties with friends for a long time
-and especially with real-life predictive data
-because we have seen it before
-and especially if we have data on the individual difference of
consistency
-age affects this
-people tend to get more consistent as they age
-so does preference for consistency
-and so does self-monitoring
Mischel himself found self-control in childhood to be predictive of certain life
outcomes (personality responses would say he is hypocritical):
-the marshmallow test
-age 4
-"waiters" vs. "grabbers"
-competence ratings (by teachers)
-age 18
-SAT scores
-age 18
-Ratings of health
-age 18
