The Person-Situation Debate
First things first:
-Do traits even exist???
Walter Mischel
-touched off the debate in 1968
-social psychologist
-said situations dictate our behavior more than personality traits
-to understand and predict behavior, look at the situation
-also look at location, culture, and customs
-It all started in 1928 with an examination of moral character in kids
-altruism
-self-control
-honesty
*Very difficult to predict time 2 data from time 1 data
-situation to situation
-kids were honest in one situation, then dishonest in another situation
The Situationist Argument
1. People are pretty inconsistent from situation to situation
-(B-data predicting B-data doesn't always work)
How consistent are you across situation?
-punctual
-sensation-seeking
-polite
*TAT and Need for achievement scale (nAch) are both highly
situational
Bandura on aggression
-there's "situational pull"
-who are we going to talk back to?
-not to a teacher, but maybe other people
