Document Summary

Sleep stages and dreaming measuring how long we sleep. There is (cid:272)onsidera(cid:271)le (cid:448)ariation in people"s sleep waking behavior. People sleep more when they are young. Most people sleep 7-8 hours per night. A polygraph is used to measure the electrical activity of the brain and body. Electroencephalogram (eeg: record of brain wave activity. Electromyogram (emg: record of muscle activity. Electrooculogram (eog: record of eye movements. Small-amplitude (height) waves with a fast frequency (repetition period 15 to 30 hz); musle tone; eyes move. Large-amplitude waves, slow frequency (7 to 11 hz); muscle tone; eyes closed. Eeg waves increase, slower frequency (4 to 7 hz); muscle tone; eyes not moving. Slow, large eeg waves (1 to 3 hz); associated with loss of consciousness; muscle tone, no eye movement. Rem sleep: fast brain wave pattern displayed by the neocortical eeg record during sleep; muscle inactivity (atonia) except for twitches and eye movements.
